Ford History, Our History

At Chapman Ford, it's more than a job to us. Our history is closely aligned with Ford, so this is a passion of tradition that we take seriously. For almost 110 years, the Chapman family has been selling Ford products to Ohio drivers—that's four generations! So you can bet we know our Fords here at Chapman Ford!

The Ford Motor Company officially began in 1903; by 1908, the first Model T was rolling off the lineup in Detroit, Michigan. By 1913, George Chapman of the Chapman family decided to take his passion for automobiles and turn it into a business, opening up one of the first Ford dealerships in Ohio. A year later, Ford began offering a $5-a-day wage, leading to increased production; Ford was well on its way to becoming an automotive icon, and the Chapman family was there for the ride.

Our first dealership opened in Plain City, and business was good, allowing us to expand in 1918 to a newly-built facility near the current location of the Plain City Library. The business moved once again in 1935, relocating to downtown Plain City. Further expansion in 1946 saw an additional facility open near the edge of town.

By 1978, Ford was turning out muscle cars and rugged SUV archetypes, and the Chapman business was steadily growing right along with it. A new location was opened in Maryville just as Bob Chapman Jr., of the third generation of Chapmans, took over. Today, the fourth generation—headed by Joe Chapman—continues to greet Ohio drivers at the door.

Thanks to the strength and endurance of the iconic Ford Motor Company, the Chapman family has been able to endure the ups and downs of the American economy and continue to provide first-class products to Columbus drivers.
