Whether you’re after that perfect family SUV for volleyball practice pickup and grocery runs to Kroger, or you’re after a subcompact model that has great fuel economy and is easy to drive, we have the Ford SUV for you.
Ford has created a quality SUV in every size category. If you’re new to the Ford lineup, or you’ve driven one or two of their SUVs and are curious about the others, here’s a look at the current Ford SUV lineup...
The Bronco has been a part of the Ford family for many years. It first came out in 1966, delivering a rugged off-road SUV that got the American public excited. It remained in the lineup until 1996, at which point it was sadly discontinued. Bronco fans were excited, however, to see it return in 2021—and it’s come a long way since its first model, which had a three-speed transmission and an inline-six engine. It’s grown a lot, too, seeing as the first one was actually smaller than some of Ford’s more recent subcompact SUV offerings.
Today, this fun and tough SUV has seating for five and an off-road-ready suspension and tires. In fact, Ford won a patent for its original independent front suspension front-wheel drive that made it ready to command a range of tricky terrains. The Bronco has always been a go-to for adventurers looking for a vehicle ready to go where their thrill-seeking hearts desire; it’s often compared to the Jeep Wrangler and Land Rover Defender to give you some sense of just how deep in the off-roading scene the Bronco is.
Drivers looking for the most serious off-road trims can check out the Bronco Raptor, which will have a more potent engine, beefier off-road tires, and an even more rugged suspension than the standard Bronco. It can tow more, too, making it appropriate for outdoor enthusiasts looking for a vehicle that can travel rough roads to remote destinations where they plan on staying a while.
Drivers of every style and various needs can find a trim that works for them, given that Ford designed an extensive, diverse lineup of Bronco trims that each prioritize things like performance, comfort, luxury, and other features—so there’s a Bronco for nearly everybody!
The public loves the Bronco so much that Ford even made a podcast dedicated to the history of the model called “Bring Back Bronco.” The series dives into, first and foremost, the group for whom the podcast is named: the underground assemblage of loyalists who worked tirelessly to pressure Ford to welcome the Bronco back into the family after two decades off the lineup. This podcast also covers iconic moments in American history where the Bronco made a significant appearance.
In 2022, the Bronco won the "North American Utility Award," and in 2023, it played a major role in Ford becoming the best-selling vehicle brand in the US when the Bronco alone saw an 18.3% sales increase.
The Bronco Sport joined the Ford family much later than the original Bronco, originally out for the 2021 model year. Still, it’s the Bronco’s smaller sibling, so we know what we're getting: it's made for drivers who want the off-road freedom of the Bronco but need the easier-to-handle dimensions and better fuel economy of a subcompact SUV.
To give you an idea of just how much the Bronco Sport is equal parts "utility vehicle" and "everyday vehicle," it sits on the same platform as Ford’s famed compact SUV, the Escape, and its compact truck, the Maverick. For those who want a practical vehicle for day-to-day life and an off-roader for the weekends, the Bronco Sport is a great option to bridge that divide.
Even though 2021 is when we officially got the baby Bronco, it wasn’t the first time Ford attempted to give us one. In 1988, Ford tried their hand at a Bronco that sat on a smaller platform; this happened when they turned a design student’s idea into a concept car, but it didn’t make it to production. Then again, in 2004, Ford showed guests at an auto show a smaller Bronco concept that sat on the platform of the contemporary Escape and borrowed its engine from a sedan. People have wanted a more compact Bronco for decades, and Ford knew it—it just took them a while to get it right.
Over the years, Ford has introduced unique trim options to the Bronco Sport lineup, too. For the 2024 model year, Ford introduced the Bronco Sport Free Wheeling edition. This throwback beauty adds red and orange exterior stripes and interior details that look like the sunset and give it a distinctly retro '70s aesthetic. In a way, this edition embeds the much younger Bronco Sport in the history of its larger and much older sibling.
The Mazda CX-40, Honda HR-V, and Chevy Trailblazer are what many consider the “rivals” of the Bronco Sport, but the truth is, they thrive more in the general subcompact SUV market. Only the Bronco Sport delivers such peppy off-road prowess in subcompact dimensions. Every Bronco Sport has a 4x4 drivetrain and is ready to leave paved roads.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave the Bronco Sport its "Top Safety Pick" award, so this is a vehicle we recommend with the utmost confidence—plus, it’s affordable, delivering fun and safety to those on a budget.
The Ford Escape is the esteemed compact SUV in Ford's lineup. With seating for five and solid fuel economy, it’s suited to commuters and small families alike. It’s been out since the 2001 model year, and people debate how many generations the Escape has had due to a mid-cycle redesign around 2008, but the majority agree that it’s on its fourth generation.
The Chevy Equinox, Honda CR-V, and Mazda CX-5 are often competitors of the Escape, but they can’t claim the same accolades—especially for its savvy plug-in hybrid powertrain, which has been around for half a decade now. In a more general respect, the Escape also won JD Power's "Best Performance Compact SUV Award" in 2020.
The Escape is known for its spacious cabin, great fuel economy, and excellent versatility. Its fuel economy—in particular—makes it popular among those who need to commute for work, drivers who want to take road trips on weekends, and those who need both. With solid towing abilities, it can also be your camping or excursion vehicle as well as an ideal ride for the city, thanks to its highly parkable dimensions.
Ford had already made a name for itself in the large SUV category long before the Escape came out, but smaller families and young professionals—who didn’t want a massive vehicle but did need more room than a sedan had to offer—were crying out for more compact SUVs. Ford responded to that demand with the Escape, and at times in its history, it’s been one of the top-selling models in Ford's lineup.
The Escape has gone through a near-total transformation during its time in the Ford family tree. The first generation had a five-speed manual transmission accompanied by a 2.0L engine with very little kick and unimpressive acceleration. By 2005, however, we already had a hybrid powertrain (which would leave and return again in the following two generations). Slowly, over the years, its engines got bigger and more powerful; the exterior went through a boxy phase before turning into the sleeker thing we know it to be now, chock full of Ford's fine-tuned infotainment and driver assistance features.
The Edge is Ford’s midsize SUV, and it's rather spectacular, having won the "Best Two-Row SUV for Your Money Award" from US News. We agree with this greatly since the Edge delivers a ton of value at its price point. It has several distinct engine options, solid towing capabilities, and a bunch of unique trim levels, so the Edge has a handful of configurable personalities to appeal to different drivers.
Ford brought the Edge to its lineup in 2007, marking the brand's debut in the crossover utility space. The Edge gave small families a vehicle that was as good for life in the suburbs as it was for life on the road. The first version had traits like available all-wheel drive, a six-speed automatic transmission, and a V6 engine. For families, a power liftgate was available, so loading up school gear and groceries could be a little easier. For explorers, there was a special sunroof for taking in the sights.
Solid comfort and convenience features have always come standard in the Edge's cabin, making it ready for a hectic family life. In 2008, the Edge received the Ford SYNC infotainment system, which the Blue Oval has continued to improve upon with better smartphone compatibility, touchscreen capacity, and more.
Between 2020 and 2022, Ford was slowly tweaking the Edge to be a more adventure-forward vehicle. Front-wheel drive went away, and several off-road-ready(ish) packages were added to the model's configurability. Then Ford surprised fans of this midsize SUV by pulling it for the 2023 model year, right after dedicating what seemed like a lot of attention to its redesign...
Sources say Ford is leaving the Edge in the past because it is refocusing its efforts on developing new EVs, but you can still find a great new or pre-owned Edge with us from 2023 or earlier. (Keep your spirits up, though, because Ford also once said the Bronco was gone for good, but now we have two!)
As for its competitors, the Edge gives the Chevy Blazer and Honda Passport a run for their money. We love showing this midsize SUV to drivers looking for a comfortable interior and great convenience features and who want something between a compact and a full-size.
The Explorer is Ford’s three-row SUV. With seating for seven, powerful engine options, and tons of cargo space, it’s terrific for family life and road trips alike. It’s been out since 1990, leading the charge of the family SUV boom.
The Explorer ranks high in reliability and driver experience, and it’s loaded from front to back with convenience features that keep finicky passengers happy. Many compare it to the Chevy Traverse, Honda Pilot, and Kia Telluride, but the Explorer has many years of experience over them, as it was one of the original American three-row SUVs. It’s even appeared in iconic films like Jurassic Park and Batman Begins.
When you need seating for up to eight, the Expedition will be the Ford SUV for you. This full-size model won the Kelley Blue Book "Full-Size SUV Best Buy Award," and it’s clear why: it’s loaded with versatile cargo spaces, tons of passenger space, and comfort and convenience features everywhere you look.
Drivers who consider the Expedition often also check out the Chevy Tahoe, the Chevy Suburban, and the Nissan Armada, but Ford has a long history of perfection in the Expedition that its rivals can't match. This full-size SUV debuted in 1997, following the temporary discontinuation of the Bronco, and it's gotten better every year since then.
For a long time, Ford had the SUV market cornered; only in the early 2000s did other major automakers start producing serious competition. And it showed because, by the time of the Expedition's second generation in 2003, Ford made major improvements to the ride quality and behind-the-wheel experience to make it much more comfortable for long drives, as well as to give it an advantage in an increasingly competitive market. The power-folding third row—still a popular feature—showed up in the second generation, too.
By the third generation—which kicked off in 2007—there was a clear pivot toward performance-friendly features. The engine got bigger, as did the towing capacity, thanks to a standard Class II trailer hitch. There was a big boost in the safety features, too, which families and road trippers alike could appreciate.
Moving into the fourth generation, the Expedition got an exterior makeover; it came out looking sleeker and distinctly more cosmopolitan, which could be why this generation became popular among politicians and celebrities, not just carpoolers and campers.
